We provide unique overland tours with an emphasis on home-style comfort for the seasoned (40+) traveler which has evolved over the years.
In December 2006 the previous owners decided it was time to retire after having the company for 23 years. Kiboko needed some fresh blood and innovative ideas to keep up with trends. Stephen Nielsen was working for Kiboko at the time having been an overland guide for Kiboko and doing the marketing and he was offered the opportunity to buy the company. He was then joined by 2 old friends and now business partners Murdoch and Bill. Together they noticed the growing international reputation of the Kiboko Adventures brand and the potential to grow in the years ahead and decided to purchase the company. Each of the owners has travelled extensively in Africa and the world and knew they could use that experience, knowledge and passion to grow Kiboko into something special.
That day is now history as the company has grown from strength to strength over the past 17 years. After starting with 5 vehicles we now have 13 vehicles on the road and carry many times the number of passengers we did in 2006.
We are all about innovating adventure travel and improving our service to customers. We seek out and retain talented staff, keep investing back into the business with new equipment and vehicles, and always strive to provide unique and affordable adventure tour packages to our valued customers.
Our concepts have changed dramatically over the years with our unique “fully serviced camping concept” and our “40+ clientele” making us stand out among our competitors. We are the first company to offer such tours over these routes and no doubt the rest will follow as we lead the pack!!
We are an African enterprise with all our departments and vehicles based in Cape Town and 100% South African owned.
Kiboko Adventures is now a trusted and respected brand name in the industry and one of the most popular Adventure Tour operators in Southern Africa.
Stephen started his travels when he left for London in 1993 laden with only a backpack! In 1995 a 12 week overland journey from Nairobi to Cape Town set the scene for what was to come. After 8 years of working in tourism in London and backpacking extensively across all continents of the world he returned to South Africa in 2001. After training as a game ranger Stephen joined the Karibu / Kiboko group as a guide. In 2002 after some time on the road he became the Marketing Manager for the Kiboko & Karibu group. In 2006 after many years in all departments for the company Stephen was given the opportunity to buy Kiboko Adventures – the rest is history! Stephen is still responsible for the Sales & Marketing and the reservations department of the company.
Murdoch’s love for travel began in London in the summer 1993 with him leading coach tours around the European mainland and backpacking the world extensively. On his departure from the UK in early 2000 Murdoch got involved in the overland industry and guiding both the Southern and East African circuits including treks to the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda and Uganda. Subsequent to his life on the road, he was promoted to the position of Operations Manager, a position he has held with various companies before joining Kiboko Adventures in 2006 to oversee this department. Murdoch enjoys the role of managing Kiboko’s vehicle fleet and engaging with his crew on the road and dealing with the many challenges the position brings to the table.
Bill ventured to London in 1995 to explore the world and only returned to South Africa 10 years later. After many years of travel around the globe he arrived back in South Africa just at the right time when his friends were discussing the purchase of Kiboko Adventures! As a qualified accountant Bill looks after the finances of the company keeping everything on a tight leash and making sure we have enough to keep re-investing and growing the company.
