Garden Route Overview

Located on the Southeast coast of South Africa, the Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most-loved road trips. This special stretch of the N2 runs along the coast from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, and is a favourite getaway for locals and tourist alike.

Each town along this popular route brings with it a different activity and attraction. Pass through quaint towns punctuated with ‘padstals’, fascinating history and homemade pies, or stop for a photo opportunity in one of the many bright yellow canola fields. Work on your swing at the Fancourt golf course in George, or Pezula in Knysna, catch some waves at Victoria Bay or indulge in a seafood feast in Plettenberg Bay.

The natural beauty along the way is something to be admired, with the likes of the ancient Knysna Forest that was once home to the Knysna elephant, as well as a number of National Parks and nature reserves. The Garden Route showcases the country’s most jaw-dropping vistas, charming towns and shining hospitality.

This stretch of the country has something to offer all year round, so the recommended time to visit depends on your activity preference. For those looking to work on their tan, the summer months fall from November to February. While the volume of holiday-goers does increase during this time, temperatures average 26 degrees Celsius; making for perfect beach weather. The winter months stretch from June to August, and while the region experience some rainfall and temperatures that average around 16 degrees Celsius, the foggy beaches are almost more picturesque in the colder months, not to mention the fact that you won’t be fighting the crowds. Another benefit of travelling this route in winter is the chance to see Southern Right Whales off the shores of Plettenberg Bay.

From self-catering bungalows nestled in the forest to luxury hotels overlooking the Indian Ocean, the accommodation along the Garden Route is designed to suit all tastes and preferences. Choose from a full complement of accommodation options, each of which takes full advantage of their stunning surroundings.
